Akelas Place holder for profile photo Maestro

Welcome

Real quick: If you’re coming from work or a similar professional space, this website is not for you. This website is for me to share my weird little opinions, pontifications, and side projects that most people in my day-to-day don’t need to hear. If I wanted you to hear them, I would have put it on LinkedIn. If you found me here, you’re trying too hard. I intentionally chose this obscure, semi-anonymous space for a reason. If you’re not here to judge, but to vibe, come hang out!

My name is Akelas Maestro, but most just use Akelas (Uh-key-lus). I am a university student studying civil engineering with a focus on transportation. I spend 20+ hours a week on public transit and love every bit of it. Sometimes, I wonder if I would rather be a software engineer, but then I remember mechanically stabilized earth and my hatred for car dependency and go back to my studies.

Why a blog?

My mind is a loud and sometimes chaotic place, which is where this website comes in. IRL, I am generally a very sociable person, but I also have a habit of just vomiting thoughts onto people. My intention here is have a place to let those thoughts out and run free. If the inside of my head is a mind palace (More like a cluttered studio apartment, but that’s beside the point), then this website is the backyard garden: not designed to face to be public facing, but curated nonetheless. I just need a place to send rambunctious thoughts when they’re bouncing off the walls, knocking over furniture, and disturbing my house guests.

Why not use a private journal?

Because that’s no fun! Even the most rambunctious thoughts need to learn table manners. Something about writing down my ideas, opinions, or thought process helps refine them and bring them into focus. Knowing whatever I put up here might be seen by anyone motivates me to take the time and process my thoughts.

Why not use a normal social media?

Better question: Do my family, friends, and professional contacts really need to know? Do they even care? If you’re reading this website, I either invited you here in person, or you’ve stumbled upon me in your own wanderings on the internet. I don’t know how much you do or do not read, and I don’t need to (though if you’d like to reach out, I’d love to hear from you). If you’re interested in what I have to say, you have to search this place out and ask. Normal social media feels too much like shouting my opinions on a full bus. But here? You had to come to my door and ask to talk. I don’t know about you, but that feels like a much more comfortable setting. There’s also the fact that social media companies are advertisers first and foremost and their algorithms prioritize short text and pretty pictures. Don’t know if you can tell yet, but I am too long winded for that!

Where does the name Akelas Maestro come from?

Buckle up, it’s story time.

I used to be BIG into scouting. From the age of 7 hanging around the cub scouts to 21 volunteering as an assistant scout master, I loved being a Boy Scout. So what you will about the program, for me it was exactly what I need to get me out of the house, make friends, and connect with good mentors. I do not know where I would be without that program, but it would be a worse place for sure.

Anyway, when I was in high school, I was invited to staff a week-long day camp for cub scouts, which at the time was 8-11 year-old’s. The camp was called Camp Akela (pronounced Uh-kay-la). Now, it was the tradition of cub scout camp that all the staff were given staff nicknames. I was involved in piano or orchestra at the time, and being the senior staff member outside the adults, my peers dubbed my Maestro.

Fast forward two-three years. I’m starting to get more involved in the gaming group my Dad has been a part of since his high school days. I’ve been loosely affiliated since I was 12, but didn’t really get into it. Now I’m older, the group is starting a D&D campaign, and I couldn’t say no. But I needed a proper gamer tag; everyone else had cool nicknames with a story behind it and I was still rocking whatever fixation leftover by 12-year-old me. I didn’t want to take on Maestro as that felt too pretentious, so I settled on AkelasMaestro, as in “Camp Akela’s Maestro”, figuring the group would setting on Akela (Uh-kay-la). However, the name was misread and mispronounced as Akelas (uh-key-lus). At first this bothered me, but my uncle later reminded me that Akela means “den mother” (cause, you know, CUB scouts). Suddenly I didn’t have any qualms about the mispronunciation.

So yeah. That’s how I got my name.

Bonus Fact: my wife got involved in the group recently and we had to come up with her name. She did not have a cool story at the time or a previous name. We ended up settling on Gigglez which proved appropriate. My wife, bless her heart, is, at times, very shy and always extremely froo froo. The nervous or excited giggles are endless.
